The Moodle family splits into three products. Moodle LMS is the open-source GPL software you self-host or run through a partner. MoodleCloud is the official managed SaaS, capped at 750 users. The sweet spots: under 200 learners with no IT? MoodleCloud. Between 200 and 5,000 with customization needs? A managed Moodle Partner on Moodle LMS. Above 5,000 with strong IT? Self-hosted or partner-hosted Moodle LMS. Corporate L&D, multi-tenant portals, or certifications? Workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Watch out for MoodleCloud’s no-plugin policy and 750-user ceiling. If you need SSO with your SIS, a custom theme, or 800 students, MoodleCloud is not an option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Managed hosting wins on TCO below 5,000 users by a wide margin. Self-hosted only becomes economical at 5,000 to 10,000 users, where the fixed sysadmin cost spreads across enough learners to beat managed pricing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hidden one-time costs catch buyers off guard. Initial install runs $2,000 to $6,000. SSO and HRIS integration is $6,000 to $20,000. Content migration from a legacy LMS adds $2,000 to $8,000. Admin training is $1,500 to $5,000. None of that appears on a vendor pricing page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The verdict by tier. Under 200 learners: budget $700 to $1,700 AUD per year on MoodleCloud. From 200 to 5,000: $5,000 to $25,000 per year managed on Moodle LMS. Above 5,000: in-house infrastructure plus a dedicated admin, or Workplace if compliance and multi-tenancy matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Mobile is the honest weak spot. The Moodle App has three tiers: Free (2 offline courses, 50 push notifications per month), Pro (4 courses, 500 notifications), Premium (unlimited). On iOS, the app must be foregrounded for sync. External URLs are not downloaded offline. Audio and video may skip download depending on file size.
